Modular CLT houses are customised and bought online

Park Corner house in Beechwood. Design by PTE Architects, manufacturer and developer: NU living

NU Living’s housing development scheme of 251 units in Basildon (UK) features five different configurable house types (Park Corner House, Avenue House, Terrace House etc) . See house configurators on https://nuliving.creatomus.com.

The two to four bedroom, 85 to 130 square-metre homes are made of CLT (Cross Laminated Timber). Designed by Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects and manufactured in the NU build modular factory in Basildon are presented using Creatomus Solution’s software platform. The U-Plan configurators offer future residents a variety of customisation options ranging from floor layouts to interior and exterior cladding materials, and kitchen appliances. Options are automatically budgeted, to give customers the clearest possible preview before contacting the sales team. Following the configuration, the entire sales process can be completed online by digitally signing the order.

Empowered with new digital tools, residential developers, manufacturers and architects are now able to offer automated choices to their customers. In an age when customisation and online shopping have become part of everyday life, the building industry is moving towards this new, customer-centric service model.

House configurators offer a spectrum of design choices, which would be virtually impossible to reproduce using conventional CAD modelling techniques. Configurators are conceptually organised into complex decision graphs and carefully set up by Creatomus Solutions inventors. The modelling is performed using Rhinoceros 3D software, while the decision graph is woven together online through a content management system.
